In the spring of 1959, a group of people began to see visions of a Methodist Church in the growing community of Guilford College. The challenge to organize and build was given to them by the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Church. Dr. J. Clay Madison, District Superintendent of the Greensboro District, assisted with the first service held in the Student Union Building of Guilford College on July 12, 1959. Fifty-seven persons were present and thirty-eight joined the church.
Six acres on the corner of Oak Ridge and New Garden Roads were selected as the site of the proposed first building. Dr. Madison declared the church organized and the Certificate of Organization was signed on August 2, 1959.
On January 1, 1961, ground was broken for the first of three units. The first service was held on Sunday, September 3, 1961.
With increasing membership of 333, a need for more adequate space for Sunday School and worship was essential. Groundbreaking services were held on June 20, 1965. This was completed and opened for use on March 20, 1966.
The Methodist Men sponsored and constructed a picnic shelter. In 1967 the shelter was enclosed and made into a youth building and Sunday School classrooms.
By 1983 the membership was 742. The Long Range Planning Committee submitted a report on new additions and the report was accepted December 11, 1983. The building plans in the design development stage were approved on October 14, 1984, and a contract was signed with the architect. The groundbreaking service was held July 20, 1986. After many fund raising projects and a bond sale, the first service in the new Sanctuary was held on January 24, 1988.
With Sunday School and church attendance increasing, plans were presented to the Board for added pews in the Sanctuary balcony. This was completed in April of 1992.
In 1993, the church membership was over 1200. We had run out of space, especially classroom and storage space. We studied our needs and created a Master Site Plan for additional education space. This included new classrooms, offices, choir room, storage and expanded/updated kitchen. Early in 1996 this building campaign was completed and dedicated.
GCUMC has had ten pastors and three associate pastors. We have built three sanctuaries, three educational facilities, two parsonages, and we are blessed with numerous ministry opportunities. The church family of GCUMC is now over 1500 members.
Jesus shared His love with us. The only way we can repay His kindness is to share His love with others in our community and beyond. Through prayer and working together we will accomplish greater dedication in service to Him. He has walked with us each step of the way.
